Choosing Your First Suit: A Guide by Mr. Shop

If you’ve found yourself at a crossroad that appears at some point in every man’s life, which is choosing their first suit, then you may have realized it’s not the simplest choice to make.

Consider Mr. Shop your GPS through the world of sartorial wear. We’re here to keep you in the right lane and headed toward the perfect fit.

The Fundamentals

When it comes to a suit, there are three fundamentals of the garment you’ll want to consider:

1. The style (Double or single breasted, two button, and three button)
2. The fit (Modern, slim, regular, skinny)
3. The color

To create more ease in this decision making process, you’ll be pleased to know that a majority of off-the-rack options come in a standard slim or modern fit, are single- breasted and two buttoned—so that narrows us down to focusing on the color of your suit. (However, keep in mind that if you choose to go the custom route, your suit can be constructed to not only fit perfectly but the style options are endless.)

The Top Three Color Ways

There are three main color ways for a first suit and they are black, grey, and navy. Each color subtly suggests why you’re wearing it and so you should take time to think about which one is the suit you’ll get most out of depending on your lifestyle.
1. Black

Black is commonly associated with formal events and funerals. This color is the most sophisticated and reserved of the three along with being the most universally thought of when one thinks of what a suit should look like.

● Best for: If you are someone who will be frequenting galas or maybe you’re
preparing to go to a wedding(s) that commonly has a black-tie dress code. Theperfect choice for a classic look.
2. Grey

Grey is the color that is the most casual. Grey suits work exceptionally well at events and occasions during the day. It’s not too serious like a black suit and is the most unique out of the three colors because of its softer tone.

● The Stylist's Choice: This is the suit where accessories and other style choices such as a shirt color, tie or no tie with the top button undone, watches, and
shoes, come into play when completing the look.

● Best for: Business meetings, networking events, date nights, and even job
interviews.
3. Navy

Lastly, a navy suit is the go-to pick for your first suit. It works for every occasion and blends the two reasons why you’d get a black or grey suit together. A navy suit is subtle enough for a formal event but is also versatile to be worn day or night.

● The All-rounder: You can dress it up or down and even get away with using the jacket as a sport coat. If you are someone who is looking for function in your wardrobe and a sagacious appearance, your best bet is a navy suit.

2026 Custom Wedding Suit Color Trends

We are anticipating another successful wedding season at Mr. Shop! Now that it’s springtime, we are in full gear to welcome clients planning their big day. To help narrow down your vision, we’re giving you the inside scoop on the top color trends for 2026 grooms' suits.

The Power of Color

One of the most significant parts of designing your suit is the color; it is the first thing people notice. At Mr. Shop, we appreciate the magic of a custom garment—it can never be boring or "wrong" because your personal design choices make it one of a kind. Trends aren’t a "follow-the-leader" concept, but a direction to help guide your vision or introduce you to new possibilities. You take the time to plan your location, venue, and entertainment—your attire deserves that same attention to detail.

Finding Your Palette

The color of your suit says a lot about the wearer and should complement your wedding's theme. If you’ve found yourself in a rut, here are the shades the Mr. Shop team is loving for the 2026 season:

Expressive & Bold: Burgundy, Olive, and Chocolate.

Timeless & Sophisticated: Classic Black, Regal Blue, and Stone.
Each option tells a story. While blues and greys are traditional, choosing burgundy or olive green is a guaranteed conversation starter. For a statement that is surprisingly subtle yet sophisticatedly daring, a chocolate brown suit is stylish, dashing, and "deliciously" confident.

Matching Your Environment

Your suit should match the theme, the weather, and your personality:

Outdoor/Garden: If you are surrounded by greenery, consider earth tones and neutrals like olive, brown, or light grey.

Waterfront: Stick to warmer earth tones that contrast beautifully against blue water.

The Ultimate Classic: A black tux or suit remains the go-to. Your moment to shine here comes through lapel shape, accessories, and fabric texture. It is a timeless choice for any venue.
